8-seater car: which used models have eight seats and when they make sense for a family
Which used cars have eight seats and when are they worth it for a family? The 2+3+3 layout, common models in Europe and when 7 or 9 seats are better.
October 27, 2026

Key takeaways
- The typical eight-seat 2 + 3 + 3 layout has two individual front seats with two three-seat rows behind them. Compared with a nine-seater, you lose the cramped middle seat up front; compared with a seven-seater, you gain one more seat in the back.
- Among used cars in Europe, eight seats are found mainly in large MPVs and passenger vans: the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, the Toyota Proace Verso and its sister models the Peugeot Traveller, Citroën SpaceTourer and Opel Zafira Life, and the older Hyundai H-1 Travel. Eight-seat SUVs have not been commonly sold in Europe.
- These models were sold with different numbers of seats, so it is the specific car, not just the model, that needs eight registered seats.
- Eight seats are worth it for a family that regularly travels as eight, or as seven with bulky luggage. If you only need the eighth seat a few times a year, a seven-seat MPV or SUV will do, saving fuel and making parking easier.
A family usually moves to an 8-seater car when it needs to carry a whole group in one vehicle: children with grandparents, two families on a day out together, or a gang of kids to after-school clubs. That shifts the choice away from estates and smaller MPVs towards large MPVs and passenger vans. More seats bring questions you don't face with an ordinary family car: how do you get into the last row, where do you store a removed bench, and will the car fit in your garage or an underground car park?
When an 8-seater makes more sense than seven or nine seats
The eighth seat is worth having if the family uses it regularly. If eight people including the driver travel together, a seven-seater won't solve the problem. If the eighth person only comes along occasionally, you will be parking and paying to run a big car on every other journey too.
| Family situation | What makes sense | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Seven people at most, third row only occasionally | A seven-seat MPV, SUV or passenger version of a small van | A smaller car is easier to park and uses less fuel. The fifth-generation Volkswagen Caddy Maxi (from 2020) still has 446 litres behind the third row with seven seats, measured to the top of the seat backs |
| Regularly eight people, for example parents, four children and a grandparent | An eight-seat large MPV or passenger van | Everyone travels in one car and there are still two individual seats up front |
| Eight people on holiday with a pushchair and sports gear | An eight-seat version with a long body | There is room for luggage behind the last row without taking legroom from passengers |
| Driver plus eight passengers | A nine-seat version | Nine-seater cars are a separate topic with their own rules |
Conventional MPVs such as the Volkswagen Sharan, SEAT Alhambra or Ford Galaxy stop at seven seats. In practice, then, eight seats mean moving up to passenger vans – longer, taller and heavier vehicles.
The 2 + 3 + 3 layout: where the aisle goes
The shorthand 2 + 3 + 3 means two seats in front, three in the second row and three in the third. The driver and front passenger have their own seats, so there is no middle seat up front, which in nine-seat versions tends to be narrow and eats into the driver's space.
Behind the front seats, though, there may be two three-seat benches, split seats or a combination of individual seats and a bench. An eight-seat interior doesn't necessarily mean eight individual seats.
| Layout | What it brings a family | What to bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Two front seats and two three-seat rear benches | Eight seats without a middle seat up front | Access to the last row is usually via a tip-forward section of the second row |
| Split, sliding rear seats | You can adjust legroom and boot space to suit the passengers | Sliding the last row back costs luggage space |
| Two individual seats in the second row and a three-seat bench at the back | A clear aisle to the last row | With two seats in front, that is only seven seats |
Choosing between seven and eight seats in the same model is therefore often a choice between an aisle and an extra seat. For a family with child seats, this matters: a seat with a child seat fitted often can't be tipped forward far enough to clear the way to the back. Sliding side doors help in a narrow parking space, but they don't solve access to the third row on their own.
A quick test getting in with your own child seats will tell you more than photos of an empty cabin. You will see straight away whether the children can get into the back without you moving child seats around every day.
Which eight-seaters to look for among used cars in Europe
The core of the choice is large MPVs and passenger vans. The following models are not ranked by quality; each handles eight seats slightly differently.
| Model and generation | Which version to look for | For which family |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz V-Class, W447 (from 2014) | A full eight-seat configuration; versions with fewer seats also exist | A family that wants the travel comfort of a car |
| Toyota Proace Verso (from 2016) | An eight-seat passenger version in the length that suits your luggage | A family that regularly fills every row and is choosing between a shorter and a longer body |
| Peugeot Traveller and Citroën SpaceTourer (from 2016), Opel Zafira Life (from 2019) | Eight-seat passenger versions, sister models of the Toyota Proace Verso | Widening the search to technically identical cars with a different badge |
| Hyundai H-1 Travel, second generation (2007–2021) | The Travel passenger version; according to Hyundai, the 2019 model year for Germany had eight seats and sliding doors on both sides | A family looking for an older, simpler eight-seater |
Mercedes-Benz V-Class: count the seats, not the rails
With the V-Class, the same body can hide very different interiors. Individual comfort seats are pleasant on long trips, but there may not be enough of them for a family of eight. Neither the model name nor photos of the floor rails will tell you how many seats there are.
For eight people, you need the full eight-seat configuration in the car itself. Buying a missing original seat tends to be expensive and slow, and if the car doesn't have eight registered seats, it isn't simply a matter of adding a bench (see the checklist below).
Toyota Proace Verso and its sister models: choose the length and interior
The Toyota Proace Verso, Peugeot Traveller, Citroën SpaceTourer and Opel Zafira Life are technically related, so you are searching one large shared pool of cars. For a family, the differences between individual cars matter more than the badge on the bonnet: the length of the body, how the benches are split and slide, sliding doors on one or both sides and the equipment in the rear of the cabin.
When the Proace Verso was launched, Toyota offered the Family version with an eight-seat layout in three body lengths, while other trims had six to nine seats. On used cars, seat counts therefore vary between trims, and the trim name alone tells you nothing about the layout of a particular car.
Hyundai H-1 Travel: eight seats for less money
The Hyundai H-1 Travel was officially sold in Europe; it isn't an exotic import. In the German specification for the 2019 model year, eight seats and sliding doors on both sides were standard.
On an older car in this category, condition comes before equipment. Wear in the cabin, working rear air conditioning, the state of the suspension and the service history will tell you how much the car will cost in family use.
Eight-seat SUVs, the Hyundai Staria and the Kia Carnival
Large SUVs sold in Europe, such as the Škoda Kodiaq, the second-generation Peugeot 5008, the Hyundai Santa Fe or the Kia Sorento, have seven seats at most. The exception is the Land Rover Defender 130, which Land Rover offers with up to eight seats. Otherwise, eight-seat SUVs are mainly American cars brought in as private imports, where the choice is narrower, parts are more expensive and there are more worries about provenance and paperwork.
Even some large family people carriers don't offer eight seats:
- Hyundai Staria, the successor to the H-1, is offered by Hyundai as a hybrid with seven seats (individual seats in the second row) or nine seats in three rows. The Staria name alone doesn't mean eight seats.
- Kia Carnival fourth generation was not officially sold in Europe. You will only find it as a private import.
For an everyday family purchase, start with European passenger vans and the V-Class. They have an established service network, available parts and plenty of cars to choose from.
How much luggage space is left, and what is life with an eight-seater like?
With every seat taken, what counts is the distance between the last row and the tailgate, not the maximum brochure volume with the seats removed. That won't help you on a shared holiday. A long body is worth looking for if eight people regularly travel with a pushchair, bikes or a week's worth of luggage.
Removable benches are handy if the car alternates between carrying people and cargo. But a whole bench is heavy, usually needs two people to lift out, and you need somewhere to keep it at home. If the family changes the number of seats every week, a sliding and folding interior is more practical.
A full cabin and boot count towards the car's payload. That has to cover the passengers, the luggage and anything on the roof, so eight seats don't tell you how much kit the whole group can take along.
In everyday use, the main things you will notice are:
- Body length and height. Taller passenger vans won't fit into some underground car parks, and the longer versions are harder to park in a standard space.
- Heating and air conditioning for the rear rows. A big cabin has to be heated and cooled; without rear air conditioning, the last row overheats in summer.
- Running costs. A bigger, heavier car uses more fuel and wears out its tyres and brakes faster than an ordinary family MPV.
- Type of journeys. A diesel suits longer trips. Frequent short journeys with a cold engine damage the diesel particulate filter and other parts of the emissions system.
What to look out for when buying a used eight-seater
The most common mistake is buying the right model in the wrong version. Passenger and commercial versions have a similar body but differ in soundproofing, rear-seat comfort, the number of windows and cabin equipment.
A short checklist:
- Number of seats on the registration certificate: it must be eight and match the car's actual equipment.
- Complete interior: all seats, seat belts, head restraints and fixings should be in the car, not “to follow”.
- Seat mechanisms: sliding, folding and locking must work without sticking or play.
- Access to the last row: child seats must not block the only way to the back.
- Doors and rear cabin: working sliding doors, ventilation and rear air conditioning.
- Condition and history: cabin wear, service records and the state of the suspension should match the mileage.
Adding seats later isn't just a matter of slotting a bench into the rails. It involves anchorages, seat belts and the car's approved configuration. If you need eight seats, buy a car that has them from the outset, not the promise of a future conversion.
Carvago: a wider choice of inspected used eight-seaters
Used eight-seaters in the right length, specification and layout are scarce on any one local market. Carvago has the widest selection of used cars: around a million cars from dealers in several European countries. A family doesn't have to take the first V-Class or Proace Verso that turns up nearby, but can choose a car with the required number of seats, length and condition.
Before sale, every car is inspected by a technician as part of CarAudit™ with up to 270 checkpoints. The check covers the available information on history and legal status, an inspection of the exterior and interior, the mechanical components, diagnostics and a test drive. You know the result before deciding to buy, and Carvago guarantees the condition stated in the CarAudit™ certificate.
Carvago buys the car from the original seller, becomes its owner and takes on the associated risks, so you buy directly from Carvago. Once the purchase is approved, Carvago uses a power of attorney to handle the paperwork, including registering the car in your country, and delivers the car to your door as standard. There is no need to sort out a purchase abroad and the registration yourself.
FAQ
Does an eight-seater have ISOFIX on every rear seat?
Not necessarily. The number of seats and the number of ISOFIX mounting points are unrelated, and where the mounting points are located varies by model and seat configuration. For a family with several child seats, access to the seat-belt buckles and the option of fitting a child seat with the seat belt matter just as much.
Is an ex-hotel or airport shuttle a bad choice?
Its previous use doesn't rule it out on its own. But such a vehicle has been through thousands of entries and exits, luggage handling and heavy use of the sliding doors and rear air conditioning. A well-maintained car in good condition with a documented history beats a cheaper vehicle with an unclear past.
Does an electric eight-seater make sense for a family?
Yes, if the family mainly drives predictable daily routes and charges at home. On the motorway with a full crew and the heating on, the range drops noticeably, so for regular long journeys without planned charging stops, a diesel is more practical.
